At the most basic level you need to learn about 'machine code' as that is ultimately what all software is interpreted to. When I did this at college ( ah....good old paper tape and punch cards ) it was very much hardware oriented, because one is dealing with the basic level at which hardware and software interact. Scaled up physical models of exactly how logic gates work are extremely useful in understanding the concepts. Most tech colleges run departments specifically for this.....and quite a few run short courses, a week or so, and even evening classes, that teach the basics.
