At the most basic level you need to learn about 'machine code' as that is ultimately what all software is interpreted to.

I think that this is definitely the best approach, although I would advise looking at how machine code was written decades ago, as chips are so complex these days.

There is a great project working on simulation of the workings of an early CPU - google 'visual6502'
