Sure, the writer is making a speculation, but there is ample information that is suggestive of the idea that Barlow was religious.

Read Jos' comment again. He is not taking issue with the articles claim that "it is clear that he had once had religion". Rather he points out that the article never presents any evidence that Barlow "clearly" subsequently "lost it."

Criticizing organized religion and promoting secularism does not preclude having personal religious beliefs.

I needed to read it again. It's strange how "didn't" can look like "did" at 4:36 am. I apologize for two glaring mistakes that a part of public history!
