I would suggest Code: The Hidden Language of Computer Hardware and Software ( http://www.amazon.com/Code-Language-Computer-Hardware-Software/dp/0735611319), by Charles Petzold. This is a really good book that explains the details of binary and binary arithmetic, logic gates, flip-flops, latches, all the way up though control panels, memory, and machine code.
