For those who are interested, it was at the Barlow's house in Paris, that proto-feminist Mary Wollstonecraft met Gilbert Imlay, by which she would have a child, Fanny, who would later suicide. Wollstonecraft would also attempt suicide twice over the affair before marrying atheist William Godwin and dying in childbirth having Mary Shelley who wrote Frankenstein and was part of the Lord Byron circle of political radicals and religious dissenters in Italy.
The free love and free thinking of the Napoleonic era would give way to the conservatism of Victorian respectability.
