I don't believe you'd die instantly as has been curtailed by movies and such, but I'm not a neurologist so I don't know for sure. The 'drop down dead' facade is probably falling unconscious since the stems to the brain would surely be serrated by a severe gunshot wound. Having the stems cut would also cut the bloodflow from the heart to the brain, killing the brain, probably due to loss of blood and oxygen — and vice versa because they have a . . . I want to say 'sycophantic' relationship but that's probably the wrong word.
This is merely speculation, however, coupled with limited research of my knowledge of the brain.
