Thanks, that helps too. What has been puzzling me is that there are occasional reports of people who have had nasty accidents where something has only just penetrated the brain, or come close, and these are usually accompanied by some comment that the person is lucky to be alive. I just don't understand why such things are life-threatening as against resulting in some (hopefully recoverable) sensory or cognitive deficit or physical impairment. I guess the question I'm asking is not so much why people like Gifford survive, but why there was a serious threat to her life, as against a threat to her brain function.
However, I'm asking this with caution, as this is a terrible incident and I don't want to seem too ghoulish.
