Its one of those things, I am very thankful to hear that Gifford's prospects for survival are still good.
They can, it just is very unlikely. Only being struck once by a high velocity ammunition and having bullets with little deformation/fragmentation gives the victim the best up-front odds of survival. Immediate, high end medical attention greatly increases those odds. All told, she is a very very lucky woman.
