I think there is some difference between speculation and an hypothesis which then encourages the sponsor to follow up with rigorous scientific endeavour. Many breakthroughs are from someone having an idea based upon a little foreknowledge and then following a hunch. Hunch doesn’t eventually stand up to further investigation (no matter how long it takes) then the idea is discarded. That is what is most existing about quantum theory and multiverses at present. I admit it can seem like a leap of faith but the science is moving so fast at present most of us (I include myself) can’t understand each aspect (nor will I ever).
