The very reason such absurd theories as Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity are accepted is because of the unforgiving adherence to the evidence in science. If you read a history of the founders of QM, you'll see many scientists did not like it then either - and that includes Einstein. But it was the only theory that explained all the facts.

Nowhere else other than science could you possible arrive at such difficult, counter-intuitive ideas that the common man could not get his head around.

For me, physics is the jewel in the crown of science because of this. The hard application of the scientific method was absolutely essential in arriving at our current physical theories.
