I've never quite seen the argument that we have sex in order to pass on our genes as any more persuasive that the argument that we pass on our genes in order to have more sex. If I view myself as the end result of a continuous unbroken process going back 3.8 billion years....I don't see how one can argue that any aspect of that process is 'more fundamental' when all aspects are required for its continuation.
