I think the psychology involved must have something in common with Stockholm syndrome. If you can persuade yourself, against all the evidence, that God / the terrorists are really good, then they'll like you back and you'll have a better chance of surviving.
Of course terrorists are all too real, and Stockholm syndrome might help you survive. I can't see it working with God, though.
