There must to be a correlation. Here is a plausible explanation. Thinking consumes a lot of energy. Believers do not do any serious thinking or have a quest for truth to try and understand the universe and life. Why would they? Their world view is revealed to them and any thinking they do is pretty mundane stuff - hence they store up the energy resulting in obesity.
