Interesting discussion here.

I've been having this discussion with my partner. On the census form she ticked 'other' and wrote 'Atheist'. By doing this she was trying to convey the active rejection of the religions listed therein, as opposed to professing agnosticism or indifference to the question. I pointed out though that, since the question is "What is your religion?", it might be taken to mean that atheism is a religion - which of course it is not.
