He is a skilled rhetorician, meaning he's good at persuading people who are easily swayed by emotion and trickery than reason and honesty. I think we're wasting our time directly in debates, even though there are good indirect reasons for doing them, because religion is not about knowledge at all, it's about politics. It's a political entity that uses Machiavellian techniques to gain power. PZ Myers gives some good reasons why debating religion is mostly a bad idea.

If we shift our focus from dealing with religion as only a matter of belief, to a political entity, then we can also shift our focus, as only an intellectual movement concerned with reason and science, to a more political one, becoming a stronger force opposing it.
