For a couple of years (2008, 2009) the UK university department where I lead the postgraduate courses was unable to use its usual venue (a civic theatre) for its graduation ceremony, and the university was offered the use of the local cathedral. I was most perturbed by this turn of events and immediately sought reassurances that the ceremony would remain entirely secular.

In the event it did, but it was still preceded by a welcome speech by the Bish, and sitting in pews still felt distinctly uncomfortable in every sense of the word.
