I'd say it wasn't so much a Stockholm Syndrome type of thing, but more not actually caring about the religion itself, but using the name and vague concept of god to try to give oneself power in a powerless situation. It's something the weak do to make themselves feel (artificially) strong, whether that weakness is self imposed or imposed by society.
