Sean Faircloth:
Attack of the Theocrats!
It is interesting to hear "sophisticated" Christians attacking Camping as a false prophet whose teachings are contrary to the spirit of Christianity. The Christ of the Gospels and the Christ that has been reconstructed by historians, as well as they can, are both apocalyptic preachers convinced they are living in the "last days" - an idea that was subsequently taken up by St Paul. It seems to me that Camping and his followers are actually quite faithful to the original, apocalyptic, spirit of Christianity. The only difference I can see is that Camping is specific whereas Christ was vague with regard to the time of the end. The problem is not bad religion, but any religion with end times fantasies which Christianity - sophisticated or fundamentalist - has in abundance.
