From my experience (I'm not an american citizen but I went to the US quite a few times), unashamed, straightforward capitalism coupled with the golden rule, plus deep problems with american education and the rise of popular culture seem to have made impotent fools out of the american public. I think the publishers just know what's good for them. So I agree with other posters, the author should consider self-publication if he wants his book to be read in the US.
