It makes people touchy and confrontational and argumentative.

It can also act like a magnet for idiots. Something is put up on youtube or somewhere. There may be 10,000 views, but some idiots post dumb and offensive comments. Those idiots are then taken as representative of all those who hold opposing views. Then some counterbalancing video is put up, and equally hateful posts appear. Given the size of the internet, this is precisely what we should expect to happen.

This is no better than radio phone-in shows. The people who phone in and comment aren't representative of anyone other than a tiny minority of people who feel like phoning radio shows.
