Anyone interested in this topic might like to read a wonderful fiction book along the same lines. The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore by Benjamin Hale. This book is about a chimp that learns to speak, educates himself and proceeds to comment on the human condition that he observes around him. Issues of animal rights, sexual activity between species, etc are dealt with in the course of the story. There are many parallels between Bruno (the fictional chimp) and Nim. Here's a description of the book:

Don't be put off by the length of the book. The 578 pages flew by. I couldn't put it down. The language is beautiful and the vocab was a treat. I had to look up the definitions of 70 words to get through this book. None of them are science vocabulary since I have a BS in Exp. Psych those words were not unknown. This is a fiction that a science major can really sink their teeth into!
