And the name is significant. If the researchers had demonstrated that Nim really could learn to use language it would count as evidence against Chomsky's theory of generative grammar which claims that all humans are born with a basic capability for language.
BTW, I didn't know that Chomsky was critical of the new atheist movement. Any references?
