Yes. Nim Chimpsky was a play on the name Noam Chomsky. In addition to being a political dissident and critic against the "new atheist" movement, Chomsky is considered one of the founders of modern linguistics. His theory of generative grammar states that human children have the innate ability to acquire lanuage.

And the name is significant. If the researchers had demonstrated that Nim really could learn to use language it would count as evidence against Chomsky's theory of generative grammar which claims that all humans are born with a basic capability for language.

BTW, I didn't know that Chomsky was critical of the new atheist movement. Any references?
