As a UK fan of all things science and astronomy, I find this news deeply depressing. I certainly hope that the US will do the one sane thing and complete this beautiful project. If the new knowledge gained from JWST is even only 10% of that of the HST, it would still be worth it. I still remember seeing the remarkable first images (after surgery) from HST all those years ago. They made astronomy current and appealing to the general public.
And $7 billion is nothing compared to the money invested each year in US defence projects devising novel ways to kill people.
