Religion provides support with a stick.
It's a common presumption that religion provides a social function, and that presumption is partially true, because that is exactly what religion does (that's why religion survives today). But provide support? Only if you obey the rules and commit several sacrifices in the process. If we ignore the abuse and ignorance and sacrifices and duty involved, then the positive sides to religion begin to emerge. Safety in numbers. It's a no brainer.
As you may have gathered, atheists are happily beginning to replace this support structure with their own, so long as you obey the rules of course, and commit the necessary sacrifices.
