That, seemingly obligatory, phrase "This Great Country" is an item of faith. It is a manifestation of where the rot set in, like the, now ludicrous, assumptive phrase "Great Britain".

Sorry to be pedantic, but the "Great" in Great Britain is a geographical description rather than a boast. It means Greater Britain, as opposed to Lesser Britain (what is now Brittany in France). That's not to say that Brits aren't disposed to bigging themselves up based largely on historical achievements rather than current ones.
