There is an old story about Mark Twain being questioned by a newspaper journalist: "Mr. Twain, what drove you from Chistianity?" Twain replied: "Christians!" The last thing the authors of the U.S. founding documents wanted was to label the U.S. religiously. Those founders were too close to all the destructive and deadly religious labeling wars of Europe, centuries worth. Yet, religions, short of memory, demand religious labeling.
