Jimmy Carter was trying to bring the evangelicals and fundimentalists into the left. It did not work, in part because most people on the left did not see the power of that voting block. Many people thought that "primitive religion" was on the way out in America in the 60's so why pay attention.

In the aftermath of the Vietnam War and removal of the universal draft for the military, evangelical groups dropped being pacifists and allowed their young men followers to join the military and be in good standing.

Could the intellectuals of the Democratic Party have coped with lots of Christian fundimentalist as it does with many fundimentalist African American dominated congregations? If Carter had been able to bring academia and fundimenalists together in a political movement, the world may have looked different.
