I think it was Starcrash who said, some time ago, something like "show me a religious person who believes he has to take matters of judgement/punishment into his own hands, and I'll show you someone who doesn't believe his god is omnipotent".
These people know, maybe at a subliminal level, that there is no punishment waiting for those they disparage, so they feel the need to provide it themselves. They do not trust their god.
