I was taught that the American Revolution was the result of forces unleashed by the Enlightenment, as was the French Revolution. It seems to me that France, despite having I-don't-know-how-many republics, and a bloody revolution, has achieved a truly secular state. In America, however, we still have a society that is entangled with religion. I find it ironic that those who claim to be following in the tradition of the "founding fathers" are those who scream the loudest about religion being part of the American experience. Maybe we all need a crash course in Enlightenment philosophy and it's relationship to the thought of people like Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Hamilton, etc..
