It's hard for me to imagine that there could be no interaction at all between church & state, that the two institutions could exist in seperate bubbles.

That maybe a view looking at the situation as it is today, but there is no more reason for there to be a link between chruch and state than there is betweeen the TiddlyWinks Society and the state, or Save the Flea Foundation and the state. In fact there should be greater restrictions on religion due to the harm it does the social evolution of the state.
