The problem for Christians is that they are trapped by scripture. They can't ignore the New Testament which clearly states people like Hitchin's are going to hell (they can of course ignore the Old Testament which has no hell). So this guy has to defend his God sending Hitchen's down to eternal torture and that's what he's trying to do. He has no other option if he's to remain a Christian.
