Since 9/11 many Americans have felt under siege from the rest of the world - "we are the US and everyone hates us" type of attitude. Top of the list of hostile foreigners are Islamists. Therefore the Xtians have been able to take over the political right with an unashamed appeal to patriotism as a counter to Islam.
Generally, Democrats (and atheists) are a bit squeamish of nationalism, and this has left a hole for Xtian fundies to move into. So I suspect the growth in right wing political Xtianity is actually more about nationalism than religion.
