There is a common concept called 'the slippery slope'. When you have a state dominant religion that is fundamentally anti-liberal, then sooner or later freedoms will erode away. All the optimism about the Arab Spring fails to take into account that these springs have all happened before, and the result is always the same--oppression and tyranny.
