Free schools, which are state-funded and run by local people or organisations, do not need to follow the national curriculum.

Whose stupid idea was this? If you have compulsory school for children up to a certain age then you have to have a legal definition of school. Otherwise you can't decide if they are going to school. Surely that necessitates some definition of what the curriculum is. Otherwise I can set up an video gaming cafe and call it a school.
