The "new thing" in math is dumbed down math.
It's word games, word plays, and NOT about doing computation or arithmetic. It's about NOT using standard algorithm math. It's about using alternative to standard algorithm math.
This basically means (for example) when adding numbers they aren't taught tine line up the numbers on top of each other and then to carry the 1, etc...they way we were taught. No it's some convoluted adding simple number to more simple number then drawing pictures and following a chart. Really! It's that bad.
search for "dumbed down" math for examples.
For me, I simply tell my children to do it the right way, not that crap that passes for math in schools.
