← Writing a new code for life?

Carbon and oxygen are pretty common in the universe, so my best guess is that most of the life out there is carbon-based and oxygen-breathing. What I'd really like to know is whether it's similar enough for us to eat it - could our enzymes break it down into something usable? Could earth plants grow in an alien ecosystem?

I'm really hoping they find alien life in my lifetime.
