Remember that there may be "life" somewhere that evolved through a technological stage where the basic chemistry of origin was dumped in favor of something that represents a discontinuous branch such as mechanosynthesis or potential stable elements past our current knowledge. It may be the case that some civilization intentionally changed their "chemistry of life" specifically to become able to tolerate the radiation exposure that could not be easily avoided in deep space travel.
