It may be the case that some civilization intentionally changed their "chemistry of life" specifically to become able to tolerate the radiation exposure that could not be easily avoided in deep space travel.

Even within present life forms on Earth, there are many which are physically much more resilient and suitable for longer space trips than humans - and probably much more physically adaptable on arriving at a new planet.

The ability to hibernate, remain dormant as eggs, resist radiations, resist high G forces, tolerate changes in air pressure, oxygen starvation, temperature etc - all come to mind.
