Comments sections are filled with comments by people who feel the urge to write comments. It can be quite a compulsion (I know). It's also self-selecting. People who write comments are those who believe they have something to say, and there sometimes isn't much to say if you have agreed with an article. On the other hand, if you feel like having a rant, there can be quite a lot to say.
We need to stop seeing comment sections as representative of anything. They aren't. They aren't polls. They aren't surveys. They are a way for magazines and newspapers to stir things up and give people the false feeling that they are somehow participating, being listened to.
