It's how the media works. If the complex issues are likely to bore the semi-literate tabloid readers or Fox viewers, - report the rantings of the village idiots instead.
How many times have we seen conferences on matters of major national or international importance, where the media story was about a group of fanatics, or breakaway factions, ranting on the steps outside!
"Debate the [simplistic] controversy!" - boost the sales and generate more copy!
