The churches claim people as their own all the time. I'm almost certainly quoted by the Vatican in the number of UK catholics, simply because that was the faith of my mother and that was the church I was forced into as a child.
So the religionists' argument, "it's up to people to self-identify, if they want to call themselves Christians they can" is a bit one-sided. Fine, let them self-identify, but grant me the same privilege!
