There's no doubt that economic decline will accompany any increase in politic/social influence from evangelicalism. The rejection of diversity (i.e. the entrenchment of privelege) can only push an economy into decline. Examples throughout history abound. It goes straight to the mathematics of complex systems.

I have heard commentators blame the hard right turn in the Republican Party on Rick Santorum but this misses the big picture. Santorum is a symptom, a positive feedback, of the legitimization of prejudice perpetrated by interlocking effects of conservative talk radio, Fox News, and political evangelicalism.
