There may be something to this. It is often said that being an atheist (and admitting so) is the surest way to not get elected to a political position. But if people were willing to hide this fact, not just in politics, but in political positions, think of the possibilities. Can anyone successfully elected to a political OR clerical office be "fired" for revealing a loss - or lack - of faith? If anyone questioned an atheist cardinal dismantling the church from the inside, that person could claim that he is fulfilling some vision or prophecy.
