If emotion trumps reason in the general population as studies suggest this would indeed be the ally we need - the sweeping up of emotion in the service of reason is an invincible combination. It is not to be underestimated. Note Christopher Hitchens' tour de force during the intelligence2 debate with Stephen Fry against the Catholic Church where his speeches driven by indignation verging on rage must have turned quite a number of the audience to our side on the strength of the emotions evoked alone.
