On the other hand, read Liviticus. That is essentially the moral and intellectual heart of ancient judaism. They wrote it, and by all acounts they were serious about it. It's really hard NOT to be superior to that!
In the same way that it is acceptable to say that WE are BETTER and morally and intelectually superior to the taliban, and the rcc, and the nazis, it is quite acceptable to say that 3000 years ago, group X might have been, or were, slightly less biggoted and xenophobic than group Y. Which is what 'better' means.
Suffering horrible persicution over the past thousand years doesn't change or mitigate what their memetic ancestors did before that.
