I went through a period of time in my life when during a physical, my physician asked me if I had turned to alcohol or drugs as a means to cope. I asked her, "why, would that help?" :-j She, of course, answered, "no."
Stress, as blasé as that sounds, is a risk factor for drug use. I look forward to reading other replies.
