At the risk of sounding bullish, i think it's a rather infantile thought process that leads people to think they may not move forwards with their lives, as they believe departed loved ones are waiting for them, or still watching them from some kind of, off world place
If i'm in distress i'll seek comfort from other human beings, rather than religion
