It's not just with mammoths that the impact theory is increasingly open to question. The whole idea that the dinosaurs were wiped out by an asteroid impact has also been brought into question as well. All the evidence now suggests ( as Klaasjansch points out in#2 ) that multiple factors are at play.....for example the emergence of the Siberian traps probably added to the effects of an asteroid impact that would otherwise have been survived. I like the increasing emergence of multiple cause ( 'last straw' ) theories.......it's clearly the way things really happen in a complex world.
