I recently read his "Confession of a Buddhist Atheist". I was impressed by how much superstition there is in Tibetan Buddhism, lots of miracles, devils, etc it's all in there. He also tries to make a case near the end that the "real Buddha's" message was corrupted quickly after his death by the surrounding Hindu environment. I have no expertise to comment on that but it reminded me of attempts to work out what the "real Jesus" said. I guess we know from the Life of Brian how quickly the message is distorted.
