I've worked with animals in a zoo, and many herbivores seem to be quite satisfied in captivity, provided some basic conditions are met. They just seem to be happy about not getting chased by predators. :-)
I've also worked with tigers, lions, panthers and wild dogs. They do not seem to thrive and I suspect that is because of the lack of live prey to feed on. They need the chase to thrive in most cases. A small cage and a predator is a bad combo...
